Four-Year Program

Micronutrients taken over a sustained period of multiple years provide maximum results. The first 1,000 days – from conception until the age of two – are most critical for any child. Without proper nutrients during pregnancy, fetal development is impaired. If exclusive breastfeeding is not practiced during the first six months of life or if the solid foods introduced after that period are nutrient-poor, young children are likely to suffer vitamin and mineral deficiencies.

Poor women and children are especially susceptible to challenges of malnutrition. Higher food prices and lower incomes usually force these individuals to reduce intake of foods that are high in micronutrient content. In fact, one-fifth of all maternal deaths are associated with iron-deficiency anemia during pregnancy. To be most effective, a four-year nutrition program (as shown on the accompanying chart) is crucial in assisting in the health and growth of children.

This program starts 90 days before conception and continues through the child's third year of life. During the first two years of the program, Pregnancy and Lactation vitamins are administered to the mother. Nutrients are passed in vitro to the unborn child, or through the mother's milk during the child's first year of life. After the child's first year of life, Child Health and Growth vitamins are administered directly to the child for the remaining two years of the four-year program.
