Direct Relief: A Network of Locally-Owned Pharmacies in Rural Honduras

Honduras

country outline

Due to food insecurity and unreliable health care, women throughout rural Honduras often struggle to access essential vitamins and nutrients when they become pregnant. To address this, Kirk Humanitarian partners with Direct Relief and donates United Nations International Multiple Micronutrient Antenatal Preparation Multiple Micronutrient Supplements (UNIMMAP MMS) to reach women in at-risk communities through a network of 471 locally-operated pharmacies run by the non-profit organization Proyecto Aldea Global.

These rural community pharmacies, operated by locally-elected pharmacy administrators, provide Kirk Humanitarian’s UNIMMAP MMS produced in partnership with CPC for free. So far, they have reached more than 47,000 pregnant women. In addition to providing these critical supplements, Proyecto Aldea Global runs pregnancy clubs in dozens of villages, where they monitor pregnant women’s health, distribute MMS, and educate women about pregnancy and nutrition. Because of Kirk Humanitarian’s donations, women in these often-underserved communities can better access the nutrition they need to ensure healthy pregnancies and babies.
