MFA: Preventative Care for Pregnant Women in Syria

Syria

country outline

During the Syrian conflict, medical facilities have been routinely targeted, destroying hospitals and killing doctors, nurses, administrators, and patients. As of the start of 2023, Multifaith Alliance (MFA) and its partner organizations have distributed 1,058,398 bottles of United Nations International Multiple Micronutrient Antenatal Preparation Multiple Micronutrient Supplements (UNIMMAP MMS) to Syrian women – these services are critical for maternal and child health.

“There are no other organizations providing these sorts of supplements, though prenatal care represents one of the most common reasons for health care visits in the region,” says Bennett Gross, Senior Board Advisor at the Multifaith Alliance.

“It gives a message to the rest of the Syrian people that there is someone who cares,” said Dr. Osman al-Haj Osman, who worked at a front-line hospital in Aleppo before it was bombed. “There is hope.”
